The rat race. The endless maze of 3/4 height grey walls. The sticky notes, staples, scotch tape. The vending machines, water fountains. The voicemails, emails, snail mails. The life of working in a corporate office.
Five years ago I set foot into my very first college art class. I could barely contain my excitement. The future ahead seemed so bright and full of vast opportunities. Work late, study hard - isn't that what our parents told us to do? And maybe, fifty years ago that's all it took. Maybe with a little bit of grease under your nails, sweat on your brow and a extra ouch of effort you could do whatever it was you set out to do. A great work ethic used to go a long way. Heck, a degree behind your name could take you even further! In 2010 however, the reality is far from what our parents long envisioned for us. Musicians are flipping burgers, poets are writing movie reviews, scientists are ringing up guests at the mall......artists are working in cubicles.
I like to think that these "hard times" are simply the beginning of the movie. The part where Harry hasn't realized he's in love with Sally. I like to think we're just waiting for that moment, the big crescendo of music, when the hard time passes. After working through the rough economy, the flipping burgers, movie reviews and angry customers, we suddenly come out of this with a new way of living, a new way of thinking. Maybe the next major Art Movement? We'll finally find out what comes after Post-Modernism? Either way, I'm certainly more than excited to find out what comes next, to see Harry finally fall for Sally.
