Every day is an adventure. And in our life sometimes "adventure" borders on "fiasco," but we take it in stride and mostly find ourselves laughing off the fiascoes that follow us. This past weekend was definitely one to be categorized as an adventure/fiasco.
For Jason's birthday, I got us tickets to attend the Big Ticket in Jacksonville with Sublime with Rome headlining the event. It had been way too long since either of us had been to a concert. And Sublime? Come on, we couldn't pass that up! So Sunday morning we woke up early and drove to Jacksonville. The concert was scheduled to start at noon (somewhere in the back of my mind I thought that sounded like an awfully early start time for a concert, but hey, who was I to judge?), so we arrived just over an hour early and were surprised to see so few people in line, but brushed that off without a second thought. Less people meant we could get closer to the stage - 10 points for us. Gates opened promptly and one of the opening bands even started performing before noon. Score! I love when an events starts on time. After over two hours of listening to one local band after another, switching from the secondary stage to the main stage, we started to get curious. Just how long was this concert going to last?
...another two hours went by...
...and another...
After five hours, we decided to head back to the hotel and not miss the remainder of the Giants-Packers football game. We opted for food rather than waiting the concert out. We knew, that yes, this meant missing actually seeing Sublime play. But we had no idea just how long it might take to get to their performance.
Later that night, Jason pulled up the concert lineup. And umm....Sublime didn't go on until 9:50. As in P.M. As in 12 hours after we arrived bright and early and stood in line to get in. Clearly we were the overly punctual, uncool kids.
Lessons learned for next year's birthday present:
- Read the fine print
- Verify just how long an event will be
&
- Don't show up early
