Putting Up the Christmas Tree

The Saturday after Thanksgiving the tree went up.  Every year.  Without fail.  My parents spent hours building the tree and stringing the lights.  But while they were busy decorating the living room, my sister and I prepared for Christmas too.  In our own way.  One Little Tikes vacuum cleaner, one baby blanket and every pin, clip or barrette we could find became our very own Christmas tree.  We blasted Elvis's Blue Christmas in the background and danced around the room.  We built a nativity set out of a Little Tikes shopping basket.  Covered it in garland and strung lights through it.  We topped it off with a glow in the dark slinkie star.  Far from traditional, but suited us just fine.

I've upgraded a bit since those days and no longer decorate a vacuum.  But I'd be lying if I said I didn't still blast music and dance around the room.
