Trick-or-Treating; Mostly Just Treating

The house behind ours was that house.  You know, that house.   The one with the black lights.  The fog machines.  The scary music.  The home owners sat there and waited.  Waited for little girls like my sister and I to walk up.  I know we were easy targets.  The type that have "just say boo and you'll scare me" pasted on our foreheads.  We tried to avoid the house, but it was only a matter of time before we circled back around the neighborhood and had to face it.  And just as we knew we would be scared, we knew it would be worth the candy.  Or at least we hoped.

After combing the neighborhood, we ended the night in the living room.  Counting, trading and negotiating.  My sister wanted the Snickers bars, I wanted the Three Musketeers.  My mom wanted the Good & Plenty's; even though she had stayed home to give out candy and didn't earn them trick-or-treating, we gladly gave them away!

This year, I'm the one at the door giving out the candy.  I'm still too much of a sissy to have our house be the "scary house" on the block.  I'll stick with the fun decorations.
