Amazing the things you find in a house. Not just the loose floorboards, or the corners that stick out just an inch too far or even the door that never stays closed, but opens every time the heat turns on. No, I mean, literally, the items you find left in a house. You find items that were perhaps left behind without the knowledge of the previous inhabitant, tucked away in a drawer overlooked. Or maybe they were items that were no longer needed. In a house that has been standing for a hundred years, its not surprising to find any number of things.
A butter tray. A simple item easily overlooked as it blends in with the refrigerator. Or a
small pineapple vase. In the form of true southern hospitality, a pineapple symbolizes welcome and friendship. We found this in the back of the dishwasher ready to be cleaned. Perhaps the dirt accumulated on it was due to the months of sitting in a vacant house, or maybe it was placed in there to be washed, only to be forgotten at the last minute.
But its not just the items in the house that make it a home. Its also the people. Over the past few days we've met so many of the neighbors in the nearby houses. Not just the next door neighbors. But the neighbors from four doors down at the corner house.
Today I met a little girl from the house on the corner who brought me these flowers. She had made them especially for us as a way to welcome us to the block. Such wonderful people!
